(By the time of Francis Pauley's first surviving letter (1901), Samuel How, Betsy and their daughter Mary Ellen have all passed away. (p.11): "Tell me this too. Has your Sister - and Father & Mothe r a Headstone - I think you told me No. and why not?" Francis Pauley identifies (pp.9,10) that Betsy How died while her daughter Annie was still young ("Don't you think that Plymouth and Devonport a re sad places for a young girl" [referring to Annie herself, after her mother's death] "especially one who has no Mother to warn and guide her?") and goes on to say (p.8) that that Annie: "...marrie d so young. At seventeen - you were hardly more than a girl.")
